Area Woman Weighs in on Love Actually; Nobody Cares

Spurred by all the other meandering, pointless posts on the 2003 movie Love Actually that have sprouted, like a fungus, across the internet in the past couple of weeks, I did what I had to do -- I weighed in with my own. Matt suggested I try out Medium, so I'm posting it there. Hope you'll read, enjoy, laugh, cry, and go read Pride & Prejudice, a book published in 1813 that gets true romantic relationships and women's invovlement in them more right than this movie. (And a bonus: the movie version has wet-shirt Colin Firth, which Love Actually does not even deign to give us.)

Weekend Report: From Lamb Brains to Kimchi

Been a while since I've done one of these weekend recaps, eh? (EH? EH?! It's the Canadian Olympic influence. My apologies.) But I had a pretty nice weekend, so why not share it with you lovely folks?

Friday I made my way to E Street to a) Drink a Guinness while sitting in a movie theater b) see "The Ghost Writer." I liked this film quite a lot, though I don't think it was by any means completely amazing. But certainly a solid thriller, that also managed to be very funny while being very dark. The acting was excellent, I want to have Ewan McGregor's babies more than ever, and though I thought a lot of plot points and character actions didn't totally make sense, overall I had a great time watching it.

By the time the movie was over we were starving so we went to the nearest restaurant, Bistro D'Oc. I'd never eaten there before; it's a little French bistro near Metro center that is both rather adorable and also rather strange seeming (weird little things; was relatively empty on a Friday. Every time the server wanted to show you a special they'd drag over a giant whiteboard with a laundry list of food scribbled on it. Tourism ads for France hung on the walls). However, the food was pretty solid—a starter of lamb brains (just because, I mean, how can you NOT order lamb brains if they're on the menu?), hangar steak and crispy duck, and red wine. Mais oui. A couple beers and some Olympic watching at PS 7 later, the night was a wrap.

felicity and star trek, a natural pairing

okay, so yes, i did spend an awful lot of time yesterday trying to piece together what references to "felicity" (one of my all-time favorite series) jj abrams might have made in "star trek" (it seemed clear to me there were shoutouts to his other work, and i was determined to make the same connection with "felicity"). also i have no life. this is what i came up with:

there's a minor female character named hannity in "star trek" that is played by the same actress who played megan on "felicity."

cameron from "house" is kirk's mom. she is also, like, keri russell's twin. this is a stretch, i admit. it's more than a stretch. it actually has no place on this list.

greg grunberg is the yelling voice on the car's dashboard cellphone when young kirk is taking a joyride. of course, grunberg has appeared in basically every jj abrams creation ever, so not exactly a "felecity" reference.

can anybody else see a kirk/spock-ben/noel parallelism here? one charming blonde boy whose physicality is an important aspect of his character, one brooding brunette guy who leans  more towards intellectualism...AND THE WOMAN WHO LOVES THEM BOTH.

okay, whatever. this is the worst post in the history of the universe. there are clearly really no references to "felicity" in "star trek." however, i do recommend that anybody who enjoys jj abrams' work (which i gather at this point to be about 75% the population of white 18-34 year olds) check out "felicity." it's not just for girls, i promise. the plotting, character development, and humor are gender-neutral—and really great! it's just a really good show. though, there is time travel at one point in the show. i kid you not. i think abrams has some sort of strange time travel obsession.
