i headed to the wilco show at the 9:30 club last night with some trepidation for the following reasons: 1) wilco's always had dumb fratboy fans at their shows, even way back several years 2) their fratboy fanbase seems to have increased with their past couple of albums, which are pretty jammy 3) i didn't really enjoy their past couple of albums due to said jamminess (though i'll admit some of those songs have grown on me).
but! nevertheless, i went. it'd been a few years since i'd seen them live, and summerteeth and yankee hotel foxtrot are still a couple of my favorite albums, after all. (many thanks to melissa for the extra ticket.)
and i am so, so glad i did. wilco absolutely killed it. they sounded clear as a bell, were energetic and charming, jeff tweedy wore a cute cowboy hat, and they played NINETEEN SONGS—and that was before the neverending encore. plus they played a bunch of stuff off of summerteeth, which i don't believe they've done for a while.
i have to admit i left before the encore finished - it was hot as hades in there, i was covered with strangers' sweat, and i did happen to have a kinda asshole fratboy wedged in front of me, who had bouncy chin-length hair that he kept whipping around in time to the music so that it kept hitting me in the face (cut your hair, hippie [GOD I'M SO OLD]), so i'm not sure what the last few songs were. i'm praying they didn't play "muzzle of bees," as that may be one of my favorite wilco songs ever. but i was over the moon with what they did play (plenty of AM stuff, too, which they closed out the pre-encore set with). if i had a ticket for tonight, i'd go for sure. you guys going this evening are in for a treat.
(note: apparently tonight's show will be broadcast on NPR, so tune in at 8pm)
